You can’t avoid news stories about the Toyota recalls these days. And for good reason – when a company recalls over eight million vehicles worldwide – six and a half million of those in the United States alone – there is problem.
The most serious recalls are for something that has been dubbed unintended acceleration, which means that for some reason your car starts to accelerate and just won’t stop. There is debate as to how many accidents caused by unintended acceleration have taken lives across the U.S. and in Virginia, and only time will tell if this manufacturing defect will kill more innocent drivers and their passengers.
The idea of accidents being caused by “unintended acceleration” has historically not gotten a lot of respect from auto makers and federal regulators. Most cases, these folks claim, are caused by drivers who mistakenly slam on their accelerator pedal instead of their gas pedal when trying to avoid an accident.
This is one of the excuses being used to explain away the surprising spike in reports of unintended acceleration in Toyota vehicles that have surfaced in the last five to eight years.
