There’s an old saying about Hampton Roads: If you don’t like the weather, wait fifteen minutes. It’s true; no matter the season, the weather here can be very erratic. While an annoyance from day to day life, unpredictable weather can be downright dangerous in the winter.
It’s certainly easy to get used to the average winter temperature – between 36 and 52 degrees in Norfolk – but snowy conditions can creep up on locals. Though the southeast is known for its mild winters, Hampton Roads has been crippled by several blizzards and winter storms through the years.
One of the most notorious storms reads like an urban legend. The blizzard of 1980 famously coincided with the circus coming to town. As the show went on, a winter storm slammed the area, leaving snow banks up to eight feet high. Like something out of a movie, hundreds of people were trapped inside the Norfolk Scope Arena, waiting for the storm to subside. The National Guard passed out blankets to children, while the governor declared a state of emergency. Many other blizzards have occurred, the most recent being December 2010’s storm, which blanketed the area in over 14 inches of snow.
And while blizzards are not exactly the norm for this area, snow, heavy wind and icy conditions are par for the course each winter. In fact, many local businesses and schools have been known to close due to ice on the roads. Always remember to check the local news before traveling to work in the winter – you never know when a snowstorm may hit!
