Governor Launches Campaign to Fix Hazardous Potholes On Virginia Roadways

Late last week Governor Bob McDonnell promulgated an order requiring the Virginia Department of Transportation to begin a pothole filling campaign to fix the Commonwealth’s state-owned roadways and highways. During last year’s pothole campaign, VDOT reportedly filled in more than 160,000 holes throughout the Commonwealth.

Both the Governor and the Virginia Department of Transportation have recognized that potholes are serious roadway hazards. Repeated contact with potholes can cause a number of vehicle malfunctions, including tire blowouts. Additionally, many drivers will go to great lengths to avoid hitting potholes, such as swerving out of their lane to miss them. These erratic and unexpected actions have the potential to cause serious accidents on the road.

All-in-all the Virginia Department of Transportation is responsible for maintaining over 58,000 miles of roadways throughout the Commonwealth. Virginia officials have asked that citizens assist in this roadway safety campaign by reporting unfilled holes to the Virginia Department of Transportation by calling 1-800-367-7623 or by visiting the Department’s website at www.VirginiaDOT.org.
