How to Handle a Winter Car Accident

Automobile accidents are scary under the best of conditions, but adding in icy roads, snowstorms and cold weather, and you’ve got a recipe for disaster. It’s no wonder that this is the busiest time of year for insurance companies. With inexperienced and often times distracted drivers on the road, it seems only a matter of time before an accident occurs.

Of course, it’s always important to be proactive when driving during wintery weather. The easiest way to handle an accident is to prevent it from occurring in the first place. Double check local laws – some areas have specific rules pertaining to snow tires and when you should use your lights. Check your defroster, windshield wipers, and heat – it could make all the difference. Make sure your car is winter ready for the worst case scenario.

Even the most prepared driver can get into an accident, though, so it’s important to know what to do if you are in trouble. As in any automobile accident, exchange insurance and related information with the other driver (s). If anyone is injured call and wait for the police.  Collect as much information from the scene as possible.  Take photographs and gather facts about other vehicles and drivers involved.  Contact and report to your insurance company as soon as possible.  If your physical injuries are substantial, after you have obtained emergency treatment, contact an attorney.
