Labor Day weekend – a time for fun, family, and deadly traffic accidents

Labor Day weekend is a time for friends and families to gather and celebrate one last time before children return to school and the cool days of fall descend.  It is also one of the deadly traffic accident weekends carefully monitored by the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV).

The Virginia DMV collects accident and fatality statistics for six big holiday weekends to observe trends over time.  The major holiday weekends are New Years, Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas.

Since Labor Day is fast approaching, this is a good time to remind drivers to stay save on the roads during this busy weekend.  Drivers should keep their eyes out for distracted drivers, aggressive drivers, tired drivers, and drunk drivers.

If you are wondering just how deadly Labor Day weekend can be, check out these statistics from the last five years:

  1. Labor Day Deaths in 2008: 7
  2. Labor Day Deaths in 2007: 22
  3. Labor Day Deaths in 2006: 13
  4. Labor Day Deaths in 2005: 10
  5. Labor Day Deaths in 2004: 17

If you find yourself involved in a Labor Day weekend crash with a negligent driver, don’t hesitate to protect your rights by speaking with an experienced attorney.  You can reach the Norfolk office of Weisberg & Zaleski by calling (800) 690-0235.
