Police Chief Dies in Crash, Wasn't Wearing Seatbelt

Exmore Police Chief Stephen Trader Elliott, 64, died in a single-vehicle crash yesterday evening while off-duty.  Shortly before 7:00 pm, the front driver’s side tire on his truck blew out as he was driving down Route 609 in Accomack County.  His car overturned in a field after running off the road.  Elliot was ejected from his truck; according to State Police, he had not been wearing his seat belt.  Elliott died at the scene.  Virginia law requires drivers to wear seat belts.  Please see our library article regarding seat belt safety tips.
