A woman in
Portsmouth, Virginia recently filed a lawsuit against
Dr. David Ostman for medical malpractice. Dr. Ostman was working as a physician at the
Hampton VA Medical Center when he performed a medical procedure on a woman, which
allegedly left her with injuries to her large intestine and bladder. Dr. Ostman allegedly used a “blunt dissection” to pull the patient’s organs apart with his hands rather than using appropriate surgical tools to perform the hysterectomy.
The lawsuit also alleged that the doctor had failed to accurately identify the woman’s anatomy or consult with a more experienced surgeon for additional assistance. The woman
reportedly required additional surgeries to repair the damage caused by Dr. Ostman. The woman is now required to live with a surgical opening in her abdomen which allows for bodily waste to be collected in a pouch. The woman is seeking $1.875 million in damages.
According to one
local news report, Doctor Ostman was reprimanded by the
Virginia Board of Medicine on a previous occasion in 2004 after the Board determinhttps://dss.fosterwebmarketing.com/blog/add.cfmed that he posed a danger to the health and welfare of his patients. The Board found that he had written numerous prescriptions for medications outside of a bona fide doctor-patient relationship for medications that were not FDA approved. Following his reprimand, Dr. Ostman closed his private practice and joined the medical staff at the
VA Hampton Center. Dr. Ostman currently remains on the medical staff at the Hampton center.
