Several of our recent articles have addressed the challenges that families face finding the right nursing home or long term care facility for their loved one. The uncomfortable truth is that it is very difficult to find a nursing home that is completely free of any issues at all; adult care is an ever growing and difficult to manage industry that frustrates regulators and families alike. Suffice to say, nobody wants nursing home residents to face the horrors of abuse or neglect at the hands of their caregivers, hence the involvement of state and federal inspectors.
One unfortunate fact for families to face is that a DHHS Office of the Inspector General report revealed that over 93 percent of Virginia nursing homes have deficiencies in care. This report – which monitors State level inspections required of homes that participate in Medicare or Medicaid – tracks federal deficiencies at nursing homes across the nation. Read more about this report in our articles, “Majority of Virginia Nursing Homes have Deficiencies in Care” and “Virginia Nursing Homes Receive More Violations than National Average”.
