Leroy Hassell, Jr., the son of the late Virginia Supreme Court Justice,
Leroy Hassell, Sr., was
sentenced to serve six-years in prison earlier this month for the role that he played in a home-invasion robbery that took place last June. Hassell was originally sentenced to serve 15-years in prison for the robbery and 12-months for unlawful wounding and brandishing a firearm. The
Henrico County Circuit Court that handed down the sentence suspended 11-years of the prison term.
According to one local
news source, Hassell faced a possible life sentence in the robbery case after pleading guilty to the offense. Hassell and a co-defendant had allegedly forced their way into the home of a
Richmond resident to search for marijuana. The resident, who was home at the time of the invasion, was
reportedly beaten and held captive while the two men searched the home.
News
reports indicated that Hassell has had numerous run-ins with the law in the past including convictions for embezzlement and forgery. Hassell was able to attend his father’s funeral earlier this year under the close supervision of law-enforcement officers. Hassell
reportedly felt remorse for his actions and wished to apologize to his family.
