Driving in snowy conditions can be scary on its own, but getting stuck can be downright horrific. By staying calm and following a few basic tips, you’ll be out of the snow and on your way soon.
Always be sure to carry necessary safety accessories in your car, especially during the winter. A bag of sand costs very little, and could provide the traction you need to get your car out of an icy spot. Also, have flares and bright colored fabrics to tie to your antenna on hand to alert passing drivers of an emergency.
If you do become stuck, try not to spin your wheels in the ice. Though it’s tempting to pump the gas as much as possible, this only further buries your tire into the ice. Instead, rotate your tires back and forth to create friction and push excess snow out of the way. Lightly touch the gas when you think you’ve cleared some space. Though it might take some time, going slow will be more effective than slamming your foot on the gas.
If you become stranded in the snow, don’t leave your car unless you know where you are. Your chances of survival are far better in a sheltered place like your car. Though it seems counterintuitive, crack a window even if it’s cold. Ice and snow can seal a car’s doors and windows, and you wouldn’t want to be trapped. Rather than waste valuable gas, run the engine and the heater for ten minutes every hour and conserve power.
