Tree Branch Falls on Car, Causes Tragic Accident

In a freak accident this weekend, an 84-year old woman from Louisiana was killed on Colonial Parkway in Yorktown. The woman and her husband were headed east at 12:45 pm when a falling branch hit their Buick Lacrosse. The car ran off-road and hit another tree dead on. The woman, who was riding in the passenger seat, died at the scene. Her husband, who had been driving, was cut from the car by firefighters. He was in critical condition and was air-lifted to the Riverside Regional Medical Center in Newport News. Authorities say his condition is improving.

Authorities believe the branch broke and fell due to the high winds that day. While no amount of preparation can prevent an act of God, it is always important to factor in the weather when driving. Many of us may never suspect wind as a dangerous driving condition, but strange things do sometimes happen. Always check the weather before embarking on a trip, whether you’re heading to Disney World on vacation or simply running to the grocery store.

Of course, it is best to stay off the roads if the forecast calls for severe weather, such as hurricanes, tornados, blizzards or thunderstorms. But even relatively mild weather can be dangerous. Wind, light rain and even bright, sunny weather can create road hazards. Always be sure to pay attention when you drive, even if conditions are good. Freak of nature events like this one can truly occur to anyone at anytime.
