Virginia Beach Residents Express Concern Over Discarded Asbestos Tiles

Numerous Virginia Beach residents have expressed concern regarding the remodeling of a grocery store in the Bradford Terrace section of the city. According to one local news source, construction crews began removing asbestos floor tiles from the building last week and disposing of them in an uncovered trash container.

Several Virginia Beach residents who were interviewed by the local news wondered if the method of disposal that was being used by the construction crew was safe. In recent years, the dangers of airborne asbestos fibers have been made apparent and are known for contributing to the deadly respiratory condition known as mesothelioma.

Recently, Virginia Beach authorities have intervened in the matter and have reassured the city’s residents that the asbestos will be disposed of appropriately going forward. According to one local news source, Fred Reils, the city’s code enforcement officer was quoted saying that “the dumpster will be covered and removed.” The construction company will dispose of the remaining asbestos tiles by bagging them up and placing them in a sealed waste container to prevent heath related issues from forming in the community.
