Winter Driving Tips

Driving in winter is a necessary evil. Though the weather outside may be frightful, sometimes we have to brave the roads in order to live our daily lives. Of course, driving on icy roads can be very dangerous – you put both your vehicle and your life at risk! Slippery conditions, snow and black ice, all test your driving abilities, not to mention your car’s abilities. By following a few basic winter driving tips, you’ll be safe and sound, and on your way in no time!

Cleaning off your car seems like a simple, common sense idea, but is one that is often underestimated by drivers. Making sure your windows and tires are clear of snow and ice is the first step to driving safely during the winter. Grab an ice scraper and heat up the car while you brush off most of the snow.

Going slow also seems to be common sense, but many drivers get comfortable and cocky after a few miles, and speed up. It’s important to understand the science behind winter driving. By going slowly, you allow more time for your tires to grip the road firmly. When speeding over icy terrain, your tires cannot truly grasp the ground. This leads to slipping and sliding – always a scary possibility when driving in winter.

Having the proper tools for your car is also very important. If you know you’ll be driving in snowy conditions for much of the winter, consider investing in snow tires. They may seem extravagant at first, but could save you a lot of trouble in the long run.

In the event that you are involved in and injured in a car accident this winter, you may want to contact an attorney to discuss your options for compensation for injuries as well as property damage.  If you are in need of a Virginia personal injury attorney, contact Attorney Michael S. Weisberg for a free consultation.
