What are "expert witnesses" and why are they necessary in most medical malpractice cases?

A: Medical negligence is predicated on a specific standard of care. Whether a medical professional failed to meet his duty under this standard of care if often a question that must be answered by a medical expert. In a medical malpractice case, each party will have one or more expert witnesses who will testify on behalf of the litigants. They are also used to explain complex medical procedures and terminology to the court.
