What does a "duty to mitigate damages" mean?

A: If you have been injured in an accident, you have a duty to “mitigate” your damages by seeking prompt medical attention. If you fail to go to the doctor and your injury becomes worse, a court may find that you are at fault for the severity of your injury because you failed to take steps to mitigate your damages. This may reduce the amount of your recovery.
