What does it mean to have "custody" of a child?

A: There are two different types of custody that are recognized in Virginia: physical and legal. If a parent or guardian has physical custody of a minor, they may control where the child lives. Legal custody refers to the ability to make certain decisions on behalf of the child that impact the child’s upbringing and general welfare such as medical care, education, religious training and discipline.
