What is the difference between marital property and separate property?

A: Martial property includes assets that were obtained during the marriage. These assets may include real property, back accounts, investments, collectibles or other items of value. Separate property generally includes assets that belonged to the parties prior to the marriage or that were inherited exclusively by one of the spouses.
