What should I do if I am involved in an automobile accident?

A:

Automobile accidents can range from fender benders to tragic collisions. In either case, there are a number of action items that you should keep in mind in the event that you are involved in an accident.

• Report the accident to the police immediately. The police will often alert emergency response personnel, such as an ambulance, to accompany them to an accident scene.

• You should get checked by a medical professional as soon as possible, even if you think that you feel all right. This may mean leaving in an ambulance or making an appointment with a doctor shortly after a minor accident.

• If possible, get the names and contact information for any other drivers that were involved in the accident or that witnessed the accident. Witnesses can be very helpful if your case goes to court.

• Take photographs of the accident scene and any injuries that you obtained from the accident. It is a good idea to keep a disposable camera in your glove box for this purpose.

• Contact an experienced personal injury attorney who can evaluate your case and provide you with legal representation if necessary.
