Trying to put your Tidewater area car wreck into perspective? Consider these Virginia accident facts

You are far from being alone, according to statistics maintained by the Virginia Department of Transportation. Here are some Virginia traffic crash statistics covering alcohol related wrecks, physical problems suffered by drivers in accidents, and vehicle defects that contribute to crashes. Note, all data is from the last year for which statistics were available (2009).

General Virginia Traffic Crash Statistics

• 756 people killed: 523 drivers, 160 passengers, 73 pedestrians
• 62,976 people injured: 46,454 drivers, 15,120 passengers, 1,402 pedestrians
• 116,744 crashes: 694 fatal crashes, 44,285 injury crashes, 71,765 property damage crashes

Virginia Traffic Wrecks Involving Alcohol

• The vast majority of drivers (94.9 percent, or 175,961) were not impaired at the time of the wreck.
• 3.5 percent (6,437) were impaired by alcohol, 0.8 percent (1,449) were drinking but their level of impairment is was not known, and 0.9 percent (1.630) were drinking alcohol but were not impaired.

Physical Causes of Virginia Auto Accidents

• The majority of drivers involved in a Virginia crash were not suffering from a physical defect or impairment when their accident happened (179,004 or 95.0 percent)
• 2.358 drivers (1.3 percent) were suffering some kind of physical defect
• 1,371 drivers (0.7 percent) were tired when they crashed
• 1,347 drivers (0.7 percent) were apparently asleep at the time of the wreck
• 816 drivers (0.4 percent) were sick when they crashed
• 3,554 drivers (1.9 percent) were suffering some “other” physical problem

Vehicle Defects Contributing to Virginia Car Accidents

• Vehicles involved in accidents that had no apparent defects (196,989 or 93.0 percent)
• 1,837 tire problems (0.9 percent)
• 950 steering problems (0.4 percent)
• 949 brake defects (0.4 percent)
• 395 motor defects (0.2 percent)
• 238 light problems (0.1 percent)
• 2,750 “other” problems (1.3 percent)
