Serious Neck Injuries in Virginia Car Accidents

Serious Neck Injuries in Virginia Car Accidents

Neck injuries – often called whiplash – are common in serious car and truck accidents in Virginia, and are often written off as a minor injury. However, serious whiplash can result in long-term damage and require rehabilitation, therapy, or drugs to help ease a victim’s suffering. If you think you are suffering from a serious neck injury after a traffic crash, be sure to see a doctor to make sure that you are taken care of properly.

Keep in mind that it may take a few days or weeks for symptoms to show up, so you could be injured and not realize it until a little while after your accident. If in doubt, seek medical attention.

What is whiplash?

Whiplash – also known as neck sprain or neck strain – is a soft tissue injury to the neck. It is a common injury in auto accidents because of the sudden extension and flexion of the neck that can occur to vehicle occupants involved in a collision. Whiplash can be a very serious injury and may include injury to intervertebral joints, discs, ligaments, cervical muscles, or cranial nerve roots.

What are the symptoms of a neck injury?

Symptoms of whiplash can include neck pain immediately after the injury or after a delay of several days or weeks. Victims may also feel neck stiffness, headaches, dizziness, strange sensations in the head or neck area like burning or prickling, or shoulder and back pain. More severe symptoms of a serious neck injury include memory loss, concentration impairment, nervousness, irritability, sleeplessness, fatigue, and depression.

How are neck injuries treated?

There are a number of ways to treat neck injuries, depending on the symptoms. The first and most obvious treatment is pain medication or if the area is inflamed a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug can be taken to reduce swelling. Some symptoms respond to antidepressants or muscle relaxants. Some damage may require the victim to wear a cervical collar for 2 to 3 weeks. Rehabilitation therapy can be necessary, in the form of range of motion exercises, physical therapy, and cervical traction.

Will I recover from my neck injury after an auto accident?

In general most people will recover from their neck injury with few issues, with most victims recovering by 3 months after the accident. However, for some with serious injuries after a bad collision, neck pain, headaches, and other symptoms may be ongoing.
