Nursing Home Abuse Case Settled in Virginia

A report earlier this month in the Virginian-Pilot newspaper indicates that the family of a mentally disabled woman living in a Virginia nursing home received a $150,000 settlement from the Portsmouth, VA group home and assisted living facility at which the staff allegedly neglected and abused the woman.

Reporters from the Virginian-Pilot obtained copies of court documents filed against the nursing home operated by Unique Friends LLC, which shockingly said that the nursing home resident was "bruised, dehydrated and unable to speak."

The patient also testified that the caregivers at the nursing home beat her and kept her locked in her room for long periods without water or food. Staff at the facility denied repeated requests to allow the woman to travel to spend holidays with her family in Northern Virginia, near Washington D.C.

Virginia state government department of health officials revoked the license to operate of Unique Friends, which once operated in the 3800 block of Old Farm Road, Portsmouth, VA, in December of 2007.

The rules and regulations for the Virginia Department of Health, which governs nursing homes, are available here: http://www.vdh.state.va.us/OLC/Laws/documents/nursingHomes/nursing%20facility%20regs.pdf.

A number of former directors and employees were named as defendants in the initial $5 million-plus civil suit, which was settled in March.

Leaving your mother, grandmother, or disabled child in a nursing home for care is a difficult decision for any family.

Families need to know that their loved ones will be taken care of properly, but sometimes doctors, nurses, and low-level workers at nursing homes violate that sacred trust.

If you believe that a loved one has suffered abuse, or if you have spotted signs of nursing neglect, like bedsores, we can help your loved one get legitimate medical care and justice for lost dignity. Contact Michael S. Weisberg, PC today at 1-800-690-0235. Call today.
