Questions to ask if you are concerned about Virginia nursing home abuse

Having a loved one in a Virginia nursing home or assisted living facility is never an easy thing. You may feel guilt or frustration at having to place your loved one in the home, and you may find it difficult to visit as often as you would like – which only adds to your guilt and frustration.

One of the biggest concerns for the families of Virginia nursing home residents is the care their loved one receives. Are their needs being met? Are they getting prompt attention? Are staff members attentive and gentle, or are they dismissive and rough?

If you are worried about your loved one’s care, one way you can evaluate the situation is to ask questions. If your loved one is able to communicate, you can ask questions like:

• Have any staff members ever hurt you?
• Have any of the other residents every hurt you? (Note, resident-on-resident abuse is not talked about enough).
• Are you afraid of any staff members or other residents?
• Has anyone – staff or resident – ever touched you without your consent?
• Do staff members refuse to give you your medication?
• Do staff members fail to give you the right dose of medication at the right times?
• Do staff members give you medication your doctor did not prescribe (like sedatives)?
• Have you been asked to sign documents that you did not want to sign or did not understand?
• Do you get left alone without care often? Are you forced to care for yourself when staff should be helping you?
• Have staff members ever restricted your ability to get to your cane, walker or wheelchair?
