Rules of the Road Proposed to Prevent Bicycle Accident Injuries
A brand new proposal from a bicycle manufacturer details and defines "rules of the road" that may help prevent bicycle accident injuries, according to a recent online report from The Baltimore Sun.
The proposal was conceived by Genesis Bikes, a leading bicycle maker. The ten safety tips for bicycle enthusiasts are as follows:
Stay off busy, noisy streets.
Turn off your mobile phone.
Wear a helmet always.
Follow traffic signals and signs.
Utilize light or bright clothing to increase your visibility.
Frequently use a bell or horn that can be heard from up to 100 feet away.
Always ride in the "right-most" lane on the street.
Ensure you signal before you make a turn, whether left or right.
Keep an eye open for car doors suddenly opening so that you don't get "doored."
Avoid using music players, like iPods.
Michael Dresser, The Baltimore Sun blogger responsible for this report, adds a caveat or two of his own. "Drivers are reminded that it's up to bicyclists to make the judgment whether a busy but legal street is the better route," he suggests. "I can't blame someone who uses busy St. Paul St. rather than less-busy Guilford Avenue if in their judgment Guilford is unsafe at certain hours. Just so the bicyclist doesn't choose to use Calvert or Charles in the wrong direction."
These exceptionally insightful comments are directed at bikers in downtown Baltimore, but are apt for cyclists in Norfolk, Newport News, Virginia Beach, or Hampton Roads as well. Watch out for busy streets and be especially careful on one-way streets.
