Virginia Car Wreck Victims & Broken Bones / Fractures

Car crash victims can suffer any kind of broken bone in an accident. The severity of a broken bone depends on where the break occurred and what type of fracture it was.

• Simple or closed fractures: Your bone may be broken, but your skin is not pierced or harmed by the bone

• Greenstick fracture: This happens when only one side of your bone breaks, causing the other side to bend.
• Transverse fracture: This type of fracture happens at a right angle to the long axis of your bone.
• Comminuted fracture: If your fracture has three or more bone fragments that have come off the bone, then you have this type of fracture.

There are several different methods that doctors can use to treat your broken bones, depending on the location and type of fracture you’ve suffered. Your doctor may use a cast or a splint, and may insert pins in your limb to hold the bones in place while you heal.

Your doctor may choose to use an external fixation method like a plaster of fiberglass cast, a cast-brace, a splint, or another type of device that goes on the outside of your body to hold your bones in place to heal. Alternatives are internal fixation methods for fractures, including the insertion of metal plates, pins or screws into the bones to hold them in place while you heal.

Depending on the severity of your fractures, you may suffer a great deal of pain or very little at all. Your future prognosis will also depend on the type and severity of the fracture.
