Virginia Elder Abuse: It Can Happen Anywhere

Any time a person is cared for by another – especially if the person receiving care is physically or mentally incapacitated – there is the potential for abuse. Virginia elders are not only abused in nursing homes or assisted living facilities. They can be abused in a variety of places, and by a variety of different caregivers.

You may think that your loved one is safe because they are not in a Virginia nursing home, but even elders being cared for in their own homes or in an adult day care center can be abused and neglected. They can be taken advantage of financially, sexually, emotionally, physically or mentally by a caregiver, stranger or a family member.

In-Home Services

In-home services offer elders and other incapacitated individuals the opportunity to live at home while receiving a minimal amount of care. Tasks performed by in-home help workers include cleaning, cooking, errands, and anything else the individual has trouble doing. Because in-home helpers have access to a vulnerable individual’s home, there is an opportunity for abuse.

Home Health Aides

Virginia ome health aides offer a little more service than in-home service providers. There are two categories of home health aides: Medicare licensed and non-Medicare licensed. Home health aides assist individuals who are disabled, ill, or elderly so they can live in their own home instead of a nursing home or assisted living facility. Home health providers vary in the quality of their workers, and if not properly screened a home health aide can commit abuse or neglect of a vulnerable individual.

Adult Day Health Care

Adult Day Health Care centers in Virginia are places that elderly or disabled individuals can go for socialization and to provide a break for the home health care person (especially when the home health care person is a family member). Abuse and neglect is less common in these settings due to the social nature of the centers and because the elder or disabled individual’s stay is short. However, vulnerable individuals can still be abused in these settings.
