Mandatory Reporting of Virginia Nursing Home Abuse or Neglect

In Virginia, it is the law that certain categories of people are required to report suspected cases of abuse, neglect or exploitation of elders or incapacitated adults. This is to protect the rights and well-being of elderly or incapacitated individuals who may be unable to speak up or defend themselves from harm.

According to the Code of Virginia, if a mandatory reporter suspects that an elder or adult is being abused, neglected or exploited, they must report their suspicions immediately. Mandated reporters must contact their local department of social services or the Virginia Department of Social Services APS hotline at 1 (888) 832-3858.

Mandatory reporters include all individuals licensed by the health regulatory boards except those licensed by the Board of Veterinary Medicine. This includes, but is not limited to:
