Males More Prone to Car Accidents, Head-On Collisions, than Females

A new study by researchers overseas shows that men are more likely to be in a car accident - including head-on collisions - than women.

The report by the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (Miros) is potentially ground-breaking.

Researchers determined that the number of male drivers reported in road accidents was 2.4 times higher than that of women.

The analysis relied on police statistics. Apparently, there were 244,336 cases involving male drivers in 2009, as compared to 103,153 cases involving women, according to Miros director-general Professor Dr. Ahmad Farhan Mohd Sadullah.

The researchers said that men had an average of 1,351.74 accidents for every 100,000 males in the general population. The average for women was about half of that-537.97 accidents for every 100,000 females in the general population.

"From these statistics, men clearly have a higher risk of getting involved in an accident than women," Sadullah said.
