Back Injuries: A Serious Cause for Concern in Virginia Car Accidents

A back injury resulting from a motor vehicle accident on the roads of Virginia can be devastating. A collision takes just one second, when a driver is distracted, careless, or even tired, but this moment in time becomes life-changing. • Spinal cord injuries: Statistics from the National Spinal Cord Injury Association show that forty percent of all spinal cord injuries are caused by automobile accidents. Symptoms include loss of movement and/or sensation, muscle spasms, weakness or paralysis, extreme pain, and pressure.
• Lumbar or thoracic injuries: Such injuries produce persistent and intermittent back pain that can be severe and oftentimes worsens with movement. These injuries may involve fractures of the spine.

This list is not exhaustive, and even includes bruising, lacerations, sprains, and strains, each of which limits, and even prevents, the victim from moving without serious pain. But back injuries are not the only damaging result of car wrecks, as the victim also may suffer from significant financial and emotional distress, including:

• Loss of income from the inability to return to work
• Medical expenses, including rehabilitation
• Inability to take care of family
• Reliance on family and friends for routine tasks
