Predicting the future for Tidewater area car wreck patients with a brain injury

One unfortunate outcome of a serious car accident in the Tidewater area is brain injury. Any time an accident victim is violently jerked around in the vehicle – especially in rollover, head-on or t-bone collisions – the head and subsequently the brain can be damaged. Accident victims thrown out of the car during a crash are also likely to experience a debilitating traumatic brain injury.

How do you know what to expect after a loved one has suffered a terrible brain injury in a car or truck wreck?

Here are a few factors that affect a traumatic brain injury victim’s health:

  1. What part of your brain was damaged? The effects of a brain injury will depend on what part of the brain was damaged in an accident. For example, if the lower part of the brain is affected, like the left temporal lobe or the lower frontal lobe, the victim could experience difficulty speaking or understanding spoken words. Or, if damage was done higher up in the brain where motor function resides, the accident victim could lose the use of their legs.
  2. How soon did the victim receive treatment? The faster an accident victim thought to have a brain injury receives treatment, the better. Immediate care is a big predictor of a patient’s recovery from a traumatic brain injury. In fact, just living long enough to make it to the hospital after a brain injury is a good sign, since brain injuries so often can result in a coma or death. The faster a brain injury victim gets treatment, the sooner medical professionals can assess the damage and get the victim the care they need to avoid further damage.
  3. Were there any after effects of the brain injury? Swelling is a huge issue for brain injury victims. The brain, like other parts of the body, will tend to swell when damaged. However, unlike other parts of the body the brain is limited in how much it can expand because it is confined inside the skull. If it swells too much without anything being done, further damage can occur.
