A driver who pleaded guilty to aggravated involuntary manslaughter and DUI in August has been sentenced. The judge in the case, Judge Hanson, stated that the drunk driving case was the worst he had seen in over 25 years.
The guilty driver, Virginia Beach resident Christopher D. Dockiewicz, 45, admitted to drinking before the accident that killed a married couple in town visiting their daughter. Dockiewicz was driving his BMW on Princess Anne Road near Seaboard Road when the accident happened.
According to police, Dockiewicz lost control of his vehicle while drunk and speeding between 77 to 100 miles per hour. He crashed head-on into a vehicle being driven by Anthony and Jean Mary Tonking, killing both of them. Dockiewicz was on his way to his son’s school to pick up the boy when he crashed into the Tonkings.
The case did not go to trial as Dockiewicz plead guilty to the charges against him. He did, however, have to face the family of the Tonkings, who testified about the pain they experienced from the loss of Anthony and Jean Mary. They were cremated on their 53rd wedding anniversary.
Hanson gave Dockiewicz 15 years behind bars, stating he wanted the sentence to be a deterrent to other drivers. The sentencing guidelines for the charges is 10 years, 1 month.
