You may not consider how important it is to protect your kidneys when you are driving in a car, unless you’ve been in an auto accident that hurt your lower back. A new study shows that if you were involved in a crash without airbags, you are far more likely to suffer kidney or renal (upper urinary tract) damage than someone who crashes in a vehicle with airbags.
These findings are significant because car wrecks are the most common source of blunt force trauma injury to human kidneys. Vehicle occupants with airbags injured in a front impact crash are 45.3 percent less likely to suffer a renal injury. Those with airbags involved in a side-impact collision are 52.8 percent less likely to suffer renal damage.
The findings in this study came as a surprise to researchers and safety advocates, as airbags aren’t usually thought of as devices to prevent injury to renal organs. When most of us – researchers and safety experts included – think of airbags, we think of a device that helps prevent neck and head injuries, and perhaps the upper body as well.
What is the point of this research? The more we know about how safety features like airbags protect vehicle occupants in a crash, the more fine-tuning can be done to these devices to keep crash victims as safe as possible. This type of research also helps lawmakers pass laws that make safety features like airbags mandatory in all new vehicles.
