Alcoholic energy drinks being turned into ethanol for cars in Virginia

Posted on Jan 27, 2011

A Virginia company has found an environmentally friendly solution to all the alcohol / caffeine energy drinks that are no longer being sold but need to be disposed of.  The company, MXI Environmental Services, of Abingdon Virginia, is recycling truckloads of the drinks, packaging, pallets and all.

Why are truckloads of alcoholic energy drinks being recycled instead of sold?  The FDA issued warnings to four companies in November, telling them that their drinks’ combination of caffeine and alcohol was dangerous.  The FDA stated that the drinks were causing people to be “wide-awake drunk”, unaware that they were intoxicated thanks to the upper effects of the caffeine.

In fact, the FDA stated that in these drinks caffeine was an “unsafe food additive”.  As a result, wholesalers for the four companies that received warning letters – Phusion Projects, Charge Beverages Corp., United Brands Company Inc., and New Century Brewing Co., are looking for ways to dump the drinks.

The wholesalers are buying the canned drinks, like Four Loko, back from retail establishments, and then sending them to companies like MXI to be processed.  The drinks are distilled and the resulting ethanol is used as a fuel additive, water in the drinks is recycled, as are their cardboard boxes, and even the pallets the drinks ship on are reused.
