Ankle bracelets for Hampton Roads area DUI offenders

Posted on Nov 28, 2010

If you are convicted of driving under the influence of alcohol in the Hampton Roads area, you could find yourself with a new piece of jewelry: an ankle bracelet.

The bracelet, known as a SCRAM bracelet, is used to monitor an individual’s alcohol usage by testing their perspiration.    The device measures the amount of alcohol in the person’s perspiration every 30 minutes, and sends daily updates to the bracelet’s vendor.  In our area, the vendor is Tidewater Alcohol Monitoring Systems.

If any discrepancies are noted in data collected from the bracelet is noted, the company notifies law enforcement.  Proponents of the SCRAM bracelets like them because they claim it is a way to keep lower level DUI offenders out of jail, which eases overcrowding and saves taxpayer money.

If you are asked to wear a bracelet, you’ll also be asked to pay for it.  Bracelets cost between $12 to $17 per day as long as they are in use.  Because offenders are forced to pay the cost, officials estimate that they’ve saved $1.2 million using SCRAM bracelets.

Because of the cost associated with the bracelets, Tidewater Alcohol Monitoring Systems is looking into securing small grants for DUI offenders who are unable to afford to wear them.
