Older drivers in Virginia are sometimes viewed by other motorists as a liability on the road, and one reason for concern is failing eyesight in elderly drivers. Anything an older driver can do to improve their eyesight makes driving that much safer, especially on our busy roads in the Norfolk and Virginia Beach areas.
One way to improve eyesight being examined by researchers is cataract surgery. Not only does cataract surgery improve a patient’s vision and quality of life, it has the side benefit of making them a safer driver.
A study performed in Australia looked at the accident rate in drivers over the age of 60. The accident rate for 27,827 older drivers was examined – one year before their first cataract surgery and one year after. The study was trying to determine if accident rates were reduced for older drivers after they had at least one cataract removed.
The findings? With cataract surgery there were 12.6 percent fewer accidents, which accounted for a savings of $4.3 Australian dollars, or $150 AD per cataract surgery.
These findings may be an important consideration for any older Virginians contemplating cataract surgery. Not only can they reduce the chance they’ll experience the pain and suffering of an auto accident, but with cataract surgery they may also be improving public safety and protecting other motorists at the same time.
