A Chesapeake pedestrian accident occurred on Sunday, October 9, 2011, when a man was struck and killed by a car. The pedestrian, Joeray L. Suarez, was crossing North Battlefield Boulevard near the traffic light at Oak Grove Road at approximately 8 p.m. when he was hit by a sedan traveling northbound. Sadly, Suarez suffered from severe head trauma and was pronounced dead at Chesapeake General Hospital. Police indicated that speed, drugs and alcohol do not appear to be factors in this car accident.
Police are concerned as Suarez is the third pedestrian to be struck and killed by a car in Chesapeake this year. The number of pedestrian fatalities in the area is the highest it has been in four years. In addition, according to records from the Chesapeake Police Department, this is also the 18th traffic fatality this year.
Just six days prior to Suarez's death, Lovette Person, 35, was killed while directing traffic on Terry Drive in front of Western Branch Intermediate School. The first fatality of the year occurred on April 21, 2011, when Kelly Valentine, 13, was hit by a driver in a Honda Civic while crossing Cedar Road at Country Club Boulevard.
We extend our deepest condolences to the families and friends impacted by these tragic accidents.
