A series of Virginia motor vehicle accidents occurred on the roads over the 2011 Labor Day weekend. According to preliminary data, there were 11 crashes resulting in 14 deaths from Friday, September 2, 2011, through Monday, September 5, 2011. This is an increase in the number of deaths from two years ago, in which there were 13 deaths throughout the Commonwealth.
Two people died in each of the three crashes occurring in Fairfax, Fauquier and Lancaster counties. Two fatalities involving motorcyclists occurred, both of whom were wearing helmets at the time of the accidents. Six motor vehicle collisions took place in Virginia Beach and the counties of Chesterfield, Mecklenburg, Northampton, Prince William and Smyth.
According to police, alcohol was a factor in at least one of the collisions. It is still underdetermined as to whether another two involved intoxicated drivers. Seven of the victims of the motor vehicle accidents were passengers and one was a pedestrian. Sadly, an eight year old boy was killed in the accident in Fauquier County.
Over the Labor Day weekend in Virginia, police arrested 110 impaired drivers, cited 7,475 drivers for speeding, and cited 2,164 drivers for driving recklessly. Virginia state police responded to a total of 577 motor vehicle crashes state-wide over the long weekend.
We are deeply saddened by these tragic accidents and we extend our deepest condolences to the families and friends impacted by these unfortunate events over the Labor Day weekend.
