Do Hispanics receive poor care in Virginia nursing homes?

Posted on Oct 29, 2010

You’d be hard pressed to find anyone these days who openly believes that it is okay to treat people differently because of their race, but according to researchers this is exactly what is happening to Hispanic nursing home patients.

According to Brown University researchers, Hispanic nursing home residents receive worse care than white nursing home residents.  The researchers studied Hispanic residents receiving care in a home where the residents were mostly Hispanic.

Hispanic residents were more likely to suffer from bed sores than white residents.  Bed sores were used as an indication of quality of care because they can be prevented with correct care.  Bed sores are in fact a sign of neglect in nursing homes, and no resident should suffer from them.

The results of this study were similar to another study that found black nursing home residents received worse care than white residents, especially in the Midwest.

Researchers believe that further research is needed to determine what their findings mean for the nursing home community and for elderly Hispanics.  They also want to find the root cause of this disparity.  If they can figure out why blacks and Hispanics receive worse care in nursing homes, they may be able to propose a workable solution and make the lives of residents much better.
