Newport News Crash Suspect Identified and Charged With DUI

Posted on Feb 18, 2011

Newport News police have identified Kurt Edward Fortner, Jr. as the driver of the vehicle that caused a multi-car crash on J. Clyde Morris Boulevard on February 14, 2011. Fortner was stopped by a deputy with the Newport News Sheriff’s Office while traveling eastbound on I-64. Rather than complying with the deputy’s instructions, Fortner took off in his vehicle and attempted to elude the police.

After exiting I-64, Fortner struck a mini-van containing a woman and her two young children. When the mini-van was struck by Fortner’s vehicle, it was hit so hard that it spun around and its rear tire flew off and struck another vehicle. That vehicle flipped over when it was struck by the tire and came to rest on the sidewalk. That vehicle also contained a woman and two young children. After colliding with the mini-van, Fortner’s vehicle went on to strike a tree and a utility pole. Video footage of the collision can be seen here. Fortner was taken to the hospital and is reported to be in stable condition. The other individuals involved in the crash were treated for minor injuries.

Fortner was charged with multiple crimes consisting of reckless driving, driving on a suspended license, DUI, evading and eluding the police and two counts of maiming while driving under the influence. The city of Newport News takes reckless driving and DUI offenses seriously. If you or someone you know has been injured in an accident or charged with a DUI offense, you should contact a local attorney who can assess your case and advise you of your rights under the law.
