A child was hit by a car at approximately 7:30 AM on November 17th, 2011 in Matthews County, Virginia. According to Virginia State Police, they responded to a call of a pedestrian being hit by a motor vehicle in the 17300 block of Route 14. When the police arrived at the scene, they found an eight-year-old boy had been hit by a car while attempting to get on his school bus.
The school bus was stopped at 17300 John Clayton Highway (Route 14), heading eastbound, when a Dodge Neon, driven by Robert L. Armellino, 69, hit the child. The lights and equipment on the school bus were active and functioning properly, but Armellino told police that he did not see the child or the bus. According to police, Armellino struck the child when he passed by the activated lights and stop sign on the bus.
The child was brought to Riverside Walter Reed Hospital in Gloucester and then transferred to Riverside Regional Hospital in Newport News. He was listed in serious condition at the time of the incident.
Armellino was charged with failing to stop for a school bus.
Our thoughts for a full and speedy recovery go out to this young boy.
