Speed is believed to have been a factor in a single-vehicle crash that injured two people seriously. According to police and witnesses, the vehicle, a 2000 Hyundai Elantra, was headed west on Providence Road when the accident happened.
It is believed that the driver was speeding when he lost control of the vehicle, crashing head-on into a tree. The force of the collision caused the Hyundai’s engine to be ejected from the vehicle.
The driver, a 23-year-old man, had to be cut from the car by firefighters as he had become trapped inside the car by the force of the collision. Both he and his passenger were taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital with serious injuries that are not believed to be life-threatening.
The accident victims are recuperating in the hospital. Neither the driver nor his passenger were wearing seat belts when the accident happened, which may have contributed to the severity of their injuries.
The accident is still under investigation, and charges have not yet been filed. It is not known if there were any other factors besides speeding that led to the crash. Car wrecks involving excessive speed are often very serious, leading to more severe injuries than those that happen at lower speeds.
