A former star of Christopher Newport University's basketball team, Brian Herrmann, was killed in a car accident on Saturday, April 17, 2011. Herrmann was 21 years old. Two other young men died in the crash as well.
CNU coach John Krikorian heard the news when he got a phone call early in the morning, according to a report in The Virginian-Pilot, a local Tidewater area newspaper.
"As a coach, you pray that your phone doesn't ring early in the morning," said Krikorian.
Apparently, the vehicle that Herrmann was riding in went out of control on Interstate 64 in Norfolk, plowing into a ditch at 11 p.m. The car was allegedly heading eastward on I-64 about half a mile west of Chesapeake Boulevard at high speeds when it went off the left side of the road.
A spokeswoman for the Virginia State Police told the media that Herrmann died at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. The two other men in the car-Clarence Ramone Hill, 22, of Norfolk, and Terrell Dontae Cherry, 21, of Newport News-died at the scene of the accident. A fourth passenger was still in the hospital and in critical condition, the police spokeswoman said.
Conley Taylor, the leading scorer last season for CNU, was devastated by the death of his friend.
"I grew up with Brian," said Taylor, a junior at CNU who went to Menchville High. "We used to compete and we got closer when we came together on the same team. We'll miss him on and off the court."
The CNU team planned to have a memorial dinner in Herrmann's honor.
"He was just the most likeable, respectful ... the guy you just wanted to be around," said Krikorian. "He loved his teammates. He valued his friendships with his teammates more than just about anything else in the world."
