Forty Percent of Holiday Traffic Deaths Were in Hampton Roads Area

Posted on Jun 19, 2011

According to the Virginia State Police, four out of the ten fatal traffic accidents that occurred in Virginia over the recent Memorial Day weekend happened in Hampton Roads.

Police reported a fatal motorcycle crash that occurred on Friday of the holiday weekend in Virginia Beach. Elliott Warren Graham III, 40, apparently flew from his bike and hit a pole around noon in the 1400 block of Salem Road.

Another two fatal crashes happened in the region on Saturday. The first occurred when a vehicle left Interstate 64, struck a concrete barrier, and turned over. The driver of the vehicle wasn't wearing a seatbelt, and thus was ejected from the car.
The second fatal crash occurred when Russell James Crawford, 42, of Suffolk, drove into an oncoming car while heading east on the 300 block of W. Constance Road.

One person died on Monday when a vehicle left the road and turned over in Isle of Wight County.

According to the police, the rest of the Virginia fatal crashes occurred in Greensville, Spotsylvania, Culpeper, Prince William, and Loudoun counties.

Over the holiday weekend, state police reportedly stopped more than 8,900 people for speeding and more than 2,500 people for reckless driving. They charged 132 people with drunk driving.
