Police from the Hampton Roads area of Virginia recently completed a two-week course in car accident reconstruction, an emerging technique in law enforcement. Collision Analysis and Reconstruction, a Maryland-based company, led the course, while the Virginia Highway Safety Office funded it. Lenny Simpson, an accident reconstruction specialist for Collision Analysis and Reconstruction, described the purpose of the course: "to show them in fact that the formulas, the principles and theories that they have learned can be applied and in fact do work."
Students viewed and then participated in staged crashes as part of the course of study. One driver was stunned to learn that a car could flip over when colliding with another vehicle at just 30 miles per hour.
Another aspect to the course was the study of evidence left at an accident scene. According to instructor Gene Taitano, important crash indicators can be found on the roadway following an incident. This includes tire marks, debris, and vehicle positions.
The course hopefully will bolster the technical proficiency of Hampton Roads area police crash team members by 30 percent. The Newport News crash reconstruction team is made up of 15 officers, who get sent to help at fatal or serious crashes.
