Hampton, Virginia Car Crash Leads to Charges for Young Driver

Posted on Aug 18, 2011

On the evening of Friday, August 5, 2011, a police officer spotted a green Cadillac in the 1300 block of Garden Drive in Newport News, Virginia. Upon further observation, the officer recognized the driver of the Cadillac as 22-year-old Michael Dewayne Carter, of the 1400 block of 24th Street. The police officer tried to stop Carter, who was driving with a suspended license, but Carter refused to pull over and a chase ensued.

Carter ran a red light and almost hit two cars before being involved in a single-vehicle Virginia car crash into a tree at the intersection of Wythe Parkway and Kecoughthan Road in Hampton.

Three of the four occupants in Carter's vehicle ran after it crashed. The passenger in the front seat injured his knee during the car accident and was transported to a local hospital. The police caught the other three people who fled the scene.

Upon further investigation, the police also found a handgun in the car.

Carter has been charged with a felony hit and run, driving under a suspended operator's license and reckless driving. There is no word yet as to whether the others will also be charged.
