How New Driving Laws Will Decrease the Risk of Virginia Car Accidents

Posted on Aug 22, 2011

On July 1, 2011, several new driving laws went into effect in Virginia to address safety concerns on the roadways. The laws were implemented to reduce the number of Virginia motor vehicle accidents in the Commonwealth, including the number of teens driving under the influence. These laws included:

  1. Increased penalties for teens driving while intoxicated, including mandatory loss of the driver's license for one year and either a minimum of a $500 fine or 50 hours of community service.
  2. Motorcycles, mopeds and bicycles that do not trigger a traffic light to turn green may treat the red light as a stop sign once they have waited two full cycles of the light or two minutes, whichever is shorter.
  3. Video cameras have been mounted inside school buses, which can now record anyone who violates school bus traffic laws. The cameras will record license plates, dates and times of any violations, and fines will be assessed, payable to the local school division.
  4. Ashley's Law: Emergency vehicles entering an intersection against a red light or stop sign must flash their lights and sound a siren or the emergency personnel must yield to the right of way and stop if necessary.
