Man Dies and Suspect Apprehended in a Virginia Beach Hit and Run

Posted on Jan 28, 2012

A suspect who struck and killed a pedestrian in Virginia Beach while fleeing from the police on Monday, January 2nd, 2012, is now in custody. The suspect (Ronald Lee Perkins, Jr., 38, of the 4700 block of Teal Duck Court in Virginia Beach) is facing several charges, including homicide, hit and run, and eluding police.

According to police spokesman Sergeant Brian Ricardo, Virginia Beach police spotted an unoccupied burgundy vehicle near South Military Highway matching the description of a vehicle involved in a Portsmouth, Virginia, robbery. At approximately 11:00 PM, police watched Perkins get into the vehicle and drive away. When police attempted to pull Perkins over, he fled by turning onto Northampton Boulevard. At that time, he hit innocent pedestrian Raymond Rogers, Jr. and then continued to flee the scene. A number of officers stopped to help Rogers, who was 49 years of age and from Providence, Rhode Island. Sadly, Rogers died at the scene.

The police then found Perkins’ abandoned vehicle in the 3500 block of Bertha Street in Norfolk. At approximately 6:20 AM, on January 3rd, 2012, a Bertha Street resident found an unknown man sleeping in his van and contacted the police. The police identified the man as Perkins.

Perkins is being held without bond and also faces a robbery charge in Portsmouth from a theft at a local GameStop on December 27, 2011.

Our deepest sympathies go out to the family members and friends of Raymond Rogers, Jr., who have been impacted by this tragic event.
