Frustrated drivers in Newport News, Virginia believe that they are being unfairly ticketed due to a traffic light malfunction at Oyster Point Road and Jefferson Avenue. Local drivers feel that the light is set incorrectly because the yellow light turns red before they can even get through the intersection. The Oyster Point Road and Jefferson Avenue intersection is a large intersection with eight lanes.
The Virginia Department of Transportation sets the standard as to how long a light will stay yellow, which is 3.6 seconds for a 35 mph approach like the one found at Oyster Point Road. However, one local driver, Villa Sutton, indicated that the light changes so quickly that she gets scared because drivers are not given enough time to drive through the light. Sutton, in fact, was ticketed for $50 and she was also sent a picture to show the traffic violation.
In addition, another Newport News driver, Rose Cloud, was so frustrated with the traffic lights that she conducted her own testing. 13News also did its own testing using a stopwatch. Both testing results indicated that drivers had more time at less congested intersections to drive through the yellow lights in Newport News.
According to a city spokesperson, while this intersection is the most popular intersection for drivers running red lights in Newport News, the Virginia Department of Transportation does not have any plans to change the traffic light settings.
