Several parents of special needs students in Newport News, Virginia were upset that they had not been immediately informed that the school bus transporting their children home had crashed into a tree. At the time of the accident, parents had only been informed that their children would be home a little later that day.
On the afternoon of October 19th, 2011, the driver of a school bus filled with special needs students was bringing the students home from Woodside High School. The driver passed out, and the bus ran into a tree at Ft. Eustis Blvd and Woodside Lane. According to parent Tashia Smith, she was waiting for her son and had not been informed by the school district that the bus was in an accident. She found out by watching the four o’clock news and seeing a report of the crash. The school district finally informed Smith an hour and a half after the incident.
According to officials, the students on the bus were not injured. However, Smith indicated that her 16-year-old son Perry appeared shaken when he arrived home. Smith took her son to get checked out and reported that he was fine.
The school bus driver had been with the school system for ten years and was taken to Mary Immaculate for a medical emergency.
