A bike rider is dead after being struck by a drunk driver in Norfolk just after 3 o’clock in the morning. The bike rider was trying to cross Tidewater Drive around the 6500 block when he was hit by a sedan headed south on the road.
The cyclist, Norfolk resident Paul A. Marqueeant, 49, died at the scene of the accident from injuries he sustained when he was hit. The driver of the blue 2006 Nissan Altima that hit him, Norfolk resident Robert Jarvis, 51, was charged with driving under the influence after the crash.
According to Norfolk police, excess speed and alcohol were both factors in the accident that took Marqueeant’s life. An investigation of the incident is underway, and findings will be presented to the Commonwealth Attorney’s office to determine if Jarvis should face any additional charges.
The consequences that Jarvis will face in this case will depend on his previous record. If he has any previous drunk driving convictions, he will face more serious consequences – including possibly jail time. However, there could be mitigating factors in his case that would reduce the charges against him.
Any time a person is involved in a drunk driving accident, it is advisable that they speak with an attorney about their situations. DUI convictions in Virginia can be very serious, with consequences that can affect a person’s future and livelihood.
