Norfolk police officer facing drunk driving charges after DUI crash

Posted on Oct 25, 2010

A Norfolk police officer is now on administrative duty after being injured in a drunk driving accident.  The officer, Chesapeake resident David Michael Cooper, 37, was off-duty when he was involved in the crash.

According to police, Cooper was driving in the 6000 block of Blackwater Road when he lost control of the unmarked Crown Victoria police car that he was driving.  The vehicle veered off the road and crashed.

A local resident heard the accident happen, checked on Cooper, and called 911.  Cooper was taken by medics to Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital to be treated for his injuries.  He was later released and then booked into Virginia Beach Correctional Center.  Cooper was later released on $1,000 bond, and is scheduled to appear in court on January 5, 2011.

Virginia Beach police have not revealed Cooper’s blood alcohol level, so it is not known how intoxicated he was at the time of the crash.  Fortunately, only Cooper’s car was involved in the crash, and the property damage was minimal.

Cooper works for the Norfolk Police Department as a canine handler in the Vice and Narcotics Unit, and has been with the police for the last 10 years. Whether or not he stays on the job will likely depend on the outcome of an investigation and his January hearing.
